What We Do
Historically-Informed Performance
So what is a period-instrument orchestra?
painting by Pieter Gerritsz van Roestraten (1630–1700)
La forza delle stelle is a period-instrument Baroque orchestra. But what does that really mean?
Well, first it means that we play music on original (or replica) instruments from the time period during which our repertoire was written. Since we’re a Baroque orchestra, that means we play on instruments from or made to be like the instruments used during the Baroque period of classical music, which lasted from approximately 1600 to 1750.
But being a period-instrument orchestra also means that we are part of the historically-informed performance movement. This goes beyond just our instruments and has to do with the style in which we perform the music we play. Our goal is to try to play the music as much as possible the way it was originally played at the time it was written.
The historically-informed performance movement (also called the HIP movement) began in earnest the mid-20th century, and so we now have more than 70 years of research and practical exploration relating to how Baroque music was played by the people who originally played it.
We are so excited to share our love of Baroque music and passion for period performance with our audiences in northern New Jersey and the New York City metro area! Come join us for a concert to learn more about what what we do and to hear some amazing music, much of which you’ve likely never heard before!
